Can I just…ramble a bit here?

So…this girl. Aeka. From the visual novel Yume Miru Kusuri (The Drug That Makes You Dream.)
Yes, I’m talking about a fake girl from a visual novel…I can hear my credibility going down the drain.

But hear me out. I love playing this game, solely for this girl. I play her route over and over, and when I didn’t, I felt god-awful. Why?

Aeka is a bully victim.

Every day, she goes to class, knowing that everyone either hates her or refuses to associate with her out of fear they’ll be a target too. Her teachers don’t notice or even care. But she keeps going to school, she puts up with everything and tries to smile. She tells herself, if she just keeps going to school, her bullies will get bored. (Spoiler alert, they don’t.) And then when things start to look their darkest, that’s where the player-character comes in. Finally, Aeka has met someone who is being kind to her. And not out of pity, but because she deserves kindness. She’s a person, no matter what her bullies try to make her think, and she’s starting to believe in it again. As the route progresses, she admits that she isn’t as happy as she seems 9obviously) and even when she tried to ignore her bullies, she was mentally in a very dark place. The player character, Kouhei, being the first and only person to show her any kindness—he made her feel like she was worth something. He made her feel happy, feel like she could keep going in life. She told herself that even if only Kouhei was nice to her, it was enough. He didn’t have to be her friend or even her boyfriend, all she wanted was a friendly face, someone to say hello to her in the hallway, to acknowledge her existence and treat her as something more than trash. For the first time in years, she started to feel happy again, all starting because one person did something very simple: he told her she had forgotten part of the lunch her bullies were making her get for them. (Aeka says that if he hadn’t told her and she’d forgotten, they might tie her up and lock her in a closet…the sad part is, as we later see, she’s probably not that far off the mark.) A simple gesture, one word of kindness, and she started to “resurface,” so to speak. And then of course, there’s this scene, when Aeka keeps falling out of her chair and hitting her head on the floor and other desks, due to another cruel prank, and after a single moment of hesitation (and offering us a choice), Kouhei offers his hand to her, asks if she’s alright as he helps her up. I swear to God, I had to take a break for a moment there.

I know I sound really dumb, talking about a fake girl in a visual novel, but there’s a reason for this. I was once Aeka. Aeka was me—I saw myself in her, I recognized her plight. Playing her route, I found myself agreeing with so much of what she said—if only one person had been nice; if only one person would help; if only, if only, if only. I can’t go through her route without wanting to cry, I nearly did cry at her Good End, I felt god-awful when I forced myself to play another route. Aeka is my favorite heroine in this story, because she was me.

“You’re a coward for getting Kouhei-kun involved in this!…Kouhei-kun never did anything to you. Maybe I can’t do anything about the fact you hate me, but Kouhei-kun…He never did anything to you!”

ngl, I was grinning ear-to-ear at this point in Aeka’s route…
